Name: Utchee Creek Rainbowfish

Scientific Name:Melanotaenia splendida splendida (Utchee Creek locality)

Description: A beautiful Australian native rainbowfish known for its shimmering scales, attractive colouration and lively swimming behaviour. The Utchee Creek Rainbowfish is a geographical variety of the Eastern Rainbowfish, with mature males displaying stronger colours and more prominent fins, particularly during courtship. Peaceful, active and hardy, this species makes an excellent addition to larger community aquariums and Australian native fish displays.

Origin: Australia – Utchee Creek, North Queensland. A geographical variety of the Eastern Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia splendida splendida).

pH: Approximately 6.5–8.0

Temperature: Around 22–28°C

Adult Size: Approximately 10–12 cm

Lifespan: Approximately 5–8 years with proper care.

Food: Omnivorous. Accepts high-quality tropical flakes, small pellets, frozen and live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia and bloodworms. A varied diet containing both plant and animal-based foods helps maintain good health, growth and natural colouration.

Compatibility: Peaceful and active. Suitable for community aquariums with other rainbowfish, larger tetras, peaceful barbs, Corydoras and similarly sized non-aggressive species. Best maintained in groups of six or more, ideally with a mixture of males and females to encourage natural schooling and courtship behaviour.

Habitat: Prefers a spacious, well-filtered aquarium with clean, well-oxygenated water and moderate water movement. Provide plenty of open swimming space alongside planted areas, driftwood and natural decorations for shelter. A darker substrate can help highlight the fish's natural colouration. Regular water changes and stable water parameters are important for maintaining good health
