Scientific Name: Melanotaenia splendida inornata

Description: A beautiful and active freshwater rainbowfish known for its attractive chequered scale pattern and shimmering colouration. Chequered Rainbowfish display a combination of silver, bronze, green and golden tones, with darker markings creating a distinctive chequered appearance along the body. Males often develop stronger colours and more pronounced fins as they mature. These peaceful, energetic schooling fish make an excellent addition to spacious, well-planted community aquariums.

Origin: Northern Australia, particularly the Northern Territory, where they inhabit freshwater rivers, creeks, floodplains and wetlands.

pH: Approximately 6.5–8.0

Temperature: Around 24–28°C

Adult Size: Approximately 10–12 cm

Lifespan: Approximately 5–8 years under suitable aquarium conditions.

Food: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet of quality tropical flakes, small pellets and colour-enhancing foods. Supplement with frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia and mosquito larvae. A balanced diet helps promote healthy growth and vibrant colouration.

Compatibility: Generally peaceful and suitable for community aquariums with similarly sized, non-aggressive fish. Good tank mates include other Rainbowfish, larger Tetras, peaceful Barbs, Rasboras and Corydoras. Best kept in groups of at least six, preferably eight or more, to encourage natural schooling behaviour and reduce stress. Avoid aggressive species and very small fish that may be intimidated by their active swimming behaviour.

Habitat: A spacious, well-filtered freshwater aquarium with plenty of open swimming room, aquatic plants, driftwood and natural decorations. Chequered Rainbowfish prefer clean, well-oxygenated water with gentle to moderate flow. A secure aquarium lid is essential, as Rainbowfish are capable jumpers. Regular water changes and stable water conditions help maintain their health and vibrant colours.
