Name: Sucking Catfish – Instore pick up only.

Scientific Name:

Gyrinocheilus aymonieri

Description:

The Sucking Catfish is a hardy freshwater fish known for its sucker-like mouth and algae-grazing behaviour. Juveniles are excellent algae grazers, but adults can become territorial and aggressive. Despite its name, it is not a true catfish.

Origin:

Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.

pH:

Approximately 6.0–8.0.

Temperature:

Around 22–28°C.

Adult Size:

Approximately 20–28 cm.

Lifespan:

Approximately 10–15 years or longer with proper care.

Food:

Omnivorous. Feed sinking algae wafers, vegetable-based pellets, blanched vegetables and occasional protein-rich foods. Should not rely on algae alone.

Compatibility:

Can become territorial as it matures. Best kept singly with robust, active fish. They can be very active throughout the tank so avoid slow-moving species such as discus and angelfish, as adults may attach to their bodies.

Habitat:

Requires a spacious aquarium, with good filtration, strong oxygenation and moderate water flow. Provide rocks, driftwood, caves and hiding places.
