Ensure a check valve is used whenever an air pump is positioned at or below the waterline of the aquarium.
When an air pump is positioned below the waterline, water can siphon back and this usually occurs when the air pump looses power. This will usually destroy the air pump when water enters the air pump. This can be easily avoided by adding a check value. The one way valve only allows air to flow in one direction.
