Silver Mono (Monodactylus argenteus)
The Silver Mono is a striking, disc-shaped fish renowned for its shimmering silver body, graceful swimming style, and active schooling behaviour. Native to coastal waters, estuaries, and mangrove habitats throughout the Indo-Pacific region, this hardy species is highly prized by aquarists looking for an impressive brackish water display fish.
Silver Monos are peaceful when kept in groups and make an eye-catching addition to large aquariums. Although often sold as freshwater fish when young, they thrive long-term in brackish conditions and, as adults, are best maintained in a properly established brackish aquarium.
Common Name: Silver Mono
Scientific Name:Monodactylus argenteus
Family: Monodactylidae
Origin: Indo-Pacific Region
Care Level: Moderate
Temperament: Peaceful, Schooling
Diet: Omnivore
Minimum Tank Size: 75 gallons (285 litres) for a small group
Adult Size: 20–27 cm (8–11 inches)

Silver Monos have a tall, diamond-shaped body with brilliant silver colouring that reflects light beautifully. Their dorsal and anal fins are edged with black, while the face often displays a distinctive dark band running through the eye. As they mature, their body becomes deeper and more impressive, making them a stunning feature fish in large aquariums.
Juveniles are often found in freshwater or low-salinity environments, while adults naturally inhabit brackish estuaries and coastal marine waters.
Silver Monos are peaceful, active fish that should always be kept in schools of at least five or more individuals. Keeping them in groups reduces stress and encourages natural schooling behaviour.

Avoid keeping them with:
Silver Monos require a spacious aquarium with plenty of open swimming space. Decorations should include driftwood, rocks, and hardy plants that tolerate brackish water if desired. Strong filtration and excellent water movement are important, as these fish are active swimmers and produce a moderate bioload.
Although juveniles can tolerate freshwater for a period, adults should be maintained in brackish water for optimal health and longevity.
Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)
pH: 7.5–8.5
Hardness: 10–25 dGH
Salinity: Specific Gravity 1.005–1.015 for adults
Regular water changes and stable salinity are essential for long-term success.
Silver Monos are opportunistic omnivores and readily accept a wide variety of foods.
Recommended foods include:
A varied diet helps maintain vibrant colouration, healthy growth, and a strong immune system.
Silver Monos are energetic, fast-swimming fish that spend much of the day cruising the aquarium in coordinated schools. They are constantly active and display confident, inquisitive behaviour. When kept in appropriate numbers, they exhibit beautiful schooling displays and are far less prone to stress.
Breeding Silver Monos in home aquariums is extremely rare. In the wild, they migrate into marine waters to spawn, making captive breeding difficult. Most specimens available in the aquarium trade are wild-caught or commercially bred for the aquarium industry.
Keep Silver Monos in groups of at least five to encourage natural schooling behaviour and reduce stress. Provide a large aquarium with strong filtration, excellent water quality, and stable brackish conditions as they mature. Feed a varied omnivorous diet and ensure plenty of open swimming space to allow these active fish to thrive.
