Name: Rabauti Corydoras (Rabaut's Corydoras)

Scientific Name: Osteogaster rabauti (formerly Corydoras rabauti)

Description: A peaceful and attractive freshwater catfish featuring a warm bronze to reddish-brown body, a darker horizontal stripe running along the upper body and a lighter underside. The Rabauti Corydoras is an active, bottom-dwelling species known for its gentle temperament, social behaviour and constant foraging activity. Best kept in groups of six or more, making it an excellent addition to peaceful community aquariums.

Origin: South America, particularly the western Amazon Basin in Peru, Brazil and Colombia, where it inhabits slow-moving streams, tributaries and areas with soft substrates.

pH: Approximately 6.0–7.5

Temperature: Around 22–26°C

Adult Size: 5–6 cm

Lifespan: 5–8 years with proper care.

Food: Omnivorous. Quality sinking catfish pellets, bottom-feeder tablets, frozen or live bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia and other small protein-rich foods. Requires a varied diet and should not rely solely on leftover food from other fish.

Compatibility: Extremely peaceful and suitable for community freshwater aquariums. Compatible with small tetras, rasboras, peaceful dwarf cichlids, pencilfish and other non-aggressive species. Best kept in groups of at least 6–8 individuals to encourage natural social behaviour and reduce stress. Avoid housing with large, aggressive or predatory fish.

Habitat: Well-established freshwater aquarium with soft, fine sand substrate to protect their delicate barbels, driftwood, plants and shaded hiding places. Prefers clean, well-oxygenated water with gentle to moderate flow and stable water conditions.  Open sandy areas are important for natural foraging behaviour, and regular water changes help maintain long-term health.
