Purple Chromis - (No Online Purchases)

8 items left

The Purple Chromis (scientific name: Chromis scotti), also known as the Purple Reef-fish, is a striking marine fish prized for its vibrant lavender to deep-violet hue. While not as common as the standard Blue-green Chromis, they are highly sought after by Australian aquarists for their peaceful temperament and schooling behaviour.

Care and Behaviour
Schooling Nature:These fish are most comfortable in groups. It is highly recommended to keep them in a shoal of at least 5 or 6. In smaller groups, the dominant fish may harass the weaker ones, but in a larger group, this aggression is dispersed.

Aquarium Setup:They appreciate a tank with plenty of live rock for hiding, but they are active open-water swimmers. Ensure there is plenty of space in the middle and upper levels of the water column.

Hardiness: Generally considered a hardy species, they are suitable for intermediate keepers. However, like many Chromis, they can be sensitive to Uronema (a common parasite), so a proper quarantine period is vital before adding them to your main display.

Diet and Feeding
The Purple Chromis is an omnivore and isn't a particularly fussy eater. In the wild, they feed on zooplankton. In your aquarium, you should provide:

High-quality marine flakes or pellets.

Frozen treats such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped krill.

Feeding frequency:Because they are active swimmers, they have high metabolisms and do best with 2–3 small feedings per day.

Note on Colour Change: Be aware that juveniles are a stunning, electric purple, but as they mature, their colour often transitions into a deeper, slightly more muted blue-grey or charcoal with purple highlights.
