Name:
Pristella Tetra / X-Ray Tetra - Pick up in store only

Scientific Name:
Pristella maxillaris

Description:
A peaceful and attractive schooling tetra with a distinctive translucent silver body. Its fins feature striking black, yellow and white markings, giving the fish plenty of colour despite its mostly transparent appearance. Pristellas are hardy, adaptable and an excellent choice for beginner and established community aquariums.

Origin:
South America, occurring in river systems and coastal drainages across parts of Brazil, Venezuela and the Guianas.

pH:
Approximately6.0–8.0

Temperature:
Around22–28°C

Adult Size:
Approximately4–5 cm

Lifespan:
Approximately4–5 years

Food:
Omnivorous. Feed quality tropical flakes or small pellets supplemented with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia and bloodworms. A varied diet helps maintain good condition and colouration.

Compatibility:
Very peaceful and well suited to community aquariums with other similarly sized, non-aggressive fish. Pristella Tetras are schooling fish and should be kept in agroup of at least 6, preferably 8–10 or more. Larger groups encourage more confident and natural behaviour.

Habitat:
Prefers a well-planted aquarium with plenty of open swimming space. Plants, driftwood and shaded areas provide security, while a darker background or substrate helps highlight their translucent bodies and colourful fins. They are particularly adaptable compared with many other tetra species and tolerate a relatively broad range of water conditions.
