Pearl Scale Angelfish - (No Online Purchases)

Pearlscale Angelfish (Centropyge vrolikii) is a marine/saltwater dwarf angelfish, rather than the freshwater angelfish varieties. I’ve kept the same structure and tone as your example, used Australian spelling, and adjusted the care information for a marine aquarium. The species reaches around 12 cm and occurs naturally in Australian waters, including the Great Barrier Reef and Lord Howe Island.

The Pearlscale Angelfish is a striking marine fish admired for its distinctive two-tone colouration, pearly scales, and confident personality. Scientifically known as Centropyge vrolikii, this dwarf angelfish is native to the tropical Indo-West Pacific and is found throughout parts of northern and eastern Australia, including the Great Barrier Reef and Lord Howe Island.

Also known as the Pearl-scaled Angelfish or Half Black Angelfish, the Pearlscale Angelfish develops a pale grey to brown front half that transitions into a much darker rear portion of the body. Blue edging on the fins and orange markings around the eye, gill cover, and pectoral fin base add further contrast, making this an attractive feature fish for an established marine aquarium.

Quick Facts

Common Name: Pearlscale Angelfish
Scientific Name: Centropyge vrolikii
Family: Pomacanthidae
Origin: Indo-West Pacific, including northern and eastern Australia
Care Level: Moderate
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Diet: Omnivore
Minimum Tank Size: 190–200 litres
Adult Size: Up to 12 cm
Lifespan: Approximately 5–7 years

Appearance

The Pearlscale Angelfish has a laterally compressed body covered in pale, pearly scales. The front portion of the body is generally greyish, tan, or brown, while the rear portion becomes distinctly dark or black. The scales on the lighter section have pale centres, giving the fish its characteristic pearl-like appearance.

The fins feature attractive blue margins, while orange to orange-brown markings can be seen around the eye, along the edge of the gill cover, and at the base of the pectoral fins. These contrasting colours become particularly impressive under good marine aquarium lighting.

Temperament

Pearlscale Angelfish are active, confident, and territorial fish. Although relatively small compared with larger marine angelfish, they can become assertive towards other dwarf angelfish and similarly shaped species. They are generally peaceful towards unrelated community fish when provided with sufficient space, rockwork, and hiding places.

They are best introduced towards the later stages of stocking an established aquarium, particularly when other semi-aggressive fish are already present.

Suitable tank mates include:

Clownfish
Wrasses
Gobies
Blennies
Cardinalfish
Tangs, where the aquarium is appropriately sized
Larger peaceful community marine fish
Boxfish

Avoid keeping them with:

Other dwarf angelfish in smaller aquariums
Similarly shaped or highly territorial angelfish
Aggressive species that may constantly harass them
Very timid fish that may struggle to compete for food
Multiple Pearlscale Angelfish unless kept as a compatible pair in a suitably large aquarium

Aquarium Requirements

A mature marine aquarium with plenty of live rock, caves, crevices, and natural grazing surfaces provides an ideal environment for the Pearlscale Angelfish. Rockwork should create plenty of territories and hiding places while still leaving open swimming areas.

A well-established aquarium is strongly recommended, as Pearlscale Angelfish benefit from naturally occurring algae and microorganisms growing throughout the rockwork. Providing a variety of surfaces to graze will also help encourage natural feeding behaviour.

A minimum aquarium size of around 190–200 litres is recommended for a single Pearlscale Angelfish. Larger aquariums are preferable, particularly when keeping them with other semi-aggressive fish or maintaining a pair.

Recommended Water Parameters

Temperature: 24–26°C
Salinity: 1.020–1.025 specific gravity
pH: 8.1–8.4
Ammonia: 0 ppm
Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: Preferably below 40 ppm

Stable water quality is essential for maintaining long-term health. Marine aquariums should be fully cycled before introducing a Pearlscale Angelfish, with regular water testing and maintenance used to keep conditions stable.

Diet

Pearlscale Angelfish are omnivorous and naturally feed on algae, sponges, small invertebrates, zooplankton, and other available food sources. Providing a varied diet that includes both plant and animal matter is important for maintaining good health and natural behaviour.

Recommended foods include:

Marine algae sheets
High-quality marine herbivore pellets
High-quality marine flakes
Frozen mysis shrimp
Frozen brine shrimp
Frozen marine preparations
Finely chopped seafood
Spirulina-based foods
Small amounts of other marine invertebrate foods

Regular access to algae-covered live rock is particularly beneficial, allowing the fish to graze naturally throughout the day.

Feeding a varied diet several times throughout the day, particularly for newly introduced specimens, can help encourage confident feeding and reduce the likelihood of excessive grazing on corals.

Behaviour

Pearlscale Angelfish are active, inquisitive fish that spend much of their day swimming between rockwork and grazing on algae and other natural growth. They will often investigate new additions to the aquarium and can become quite confident once established.

They are territorial by nature and may chase fish that enter their preferred areas. Providing plenty of rockwork, caves, and visual barriers can help reduce aggression by allowing different fish to establish their own territories.

Pearlscale Angelfish can also be kept in reef aquariums with caution. Individual fish may nip at soft corals, LPS corals, zoanthids, or clam mantles, so their behaviour should be monitored carefully after introduction.

Breeding

Breeding Pearlscale Angelfish is difficult in a home aquarium and is generally best left to experienced marine fish breeders. Like other marine angelfish, they are broadcast spawners, releasing eggs and sperm into the water column, generally around dusk.

Pearlscale Angelfish are also sequential hermaphrodites. Individuals begin life as females, with the dominant fish capable of changing sex and becoming male. Compatible pairs may form naturally, although establishing a pair in captivity requires considerable space and careful management.

Why Choose Pearlscale Angelfish?

Distinctive pearly scales and two-tone colouration
Beautiful blue, orange, and black markings
Compact size compared with larger marine angelfish
Active and confident personality
Excellent grazing behaviour
Can adapt well to established marine aquariums
Suitable for experienced reef keepers with appropriate caution

Care Tips

Provide a mature marine aquarium with plenty of live rock, natural grazing surfaces, caves, and hiding places. Maintain stable temperature, salinity, pH, and excellent overall water quality.

Feed a varied diet containing algae, quality marine foods, and frozen or fresh seafood. Introduce the Pearlscale Angelfish carefully and monitor interactions with other fish, particularly other dwarf angelfish.

Although some individuals can be successfully maintained in reef aquariums, the species should be considered reef safe with caution because individual fish may nip corals or clam mantles. Providing plenty of natural algae and regular feeding may help reduce unwanted grazing, but it cannot guarantee coral-safe behaviour.
