Tank Requirements

These are not small-tank fish.

• A long aquarium with plenty of swimming room is important.
• For a proper group, around 250–300 L or larger is a sensible starting point, with more space being better.
• Keep them in a group of at least 5–6. They become much more confident when kept with their own kind.
• A secure lid is recommended because startled Silver Dollars can jump.
• Leave a good amount of open swimming space.

Feeding

Silver Dollars are strongly vegetarian/plant-focused fish.

Good foods include:

• Spirulina flakes or pellets
• Algae wafers
• Vegetable-based pellets
• Blanched zucchini or cucumber
• Spinach and other suitable leafy greens
• Peas and other vegetables

They may also accept some meaty foods, but plant matter should make up a large part of their diet.

Important: They Eat Plants

If you have a heavily planted aquarium, Silver Dollars may not be a good choice.

They are well known for eating soft and tender aquarium plants. Hardy plants, artificial plants or a more open décor setup are usually easier.

Peaceful

Silver Dollars are generally peaceful community fish, but they are:

• Very active swimmers
• Social and schooling
• Easily startled
• Much more confident in a proper group

Their peaceful nature makes them suitable for many larger community aquariums, provided their tank mates aren't aggressive or small enough to be swallowed.

Suitable Tank Mates

Look for peaceful fish of a similar or larger size.

Potential companions include:

• Larger peaceful tetras
• Larger peaceful cichlids
• Severums
• Acaras
• Larger peaceful catfish
• Suitable plecos

Avoid very aggressive fish and very small fish.
