Onyx Helmet Picasso Clownfish (No Online Purchases)

An "Onyx Helmet Picasso Clownfish" is a specific and highly desirable designer clownfish.

  • Clownfish (Amphiprion percula): This refers to the species, which is the Percula Clownfish. These are one of the most popular clownfish species in the aquarium hobby due to their relatively smaller size, peaceful nature, and vibrant colors.

  • Picasso: This is a genetic mutation that causes the white bands on the clownfish to be irregular, broken, or stretched, creating unique and artistic patterns, much like a "Picasso" painting. The amount and shape of the white markings determine the "grade" of the Picasso, with "Premium" or "Extreme" Picassos having more exaggerated and desirable patterns.

  • Onyx: This refers to a genetic trait that results in a significant increase in black colouration, particularly on the body of the clownfish. An Onyx Picasso will have more black in its patterning than a standard Picasso.

  • Helmet: This term describes a specific characteristic of the white patterning where the white band on the head extends upwards and/or merges with other white markings on the top of the head, giving the appearance of the fish wearing a "helmet."

These fish are captive-bred and are highly sought after by aquarists due to their stunning and individual patterns. No two "Onyx Helmet Picasso" clownfish will look exactly alike, making each one a unique living piece of art.

Care Requirements:

Their care is generally similar to other Percula Clownfish:

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 20 gallons for a single fish, with larger tanks (30-50 gallons) being better for a pair, especially as they mature.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Salinity: 1.020-1.025 specific gravity.
    • Temperature: 72-78°F (22-26°C).
    • pH: 8.1-8.4.
    • Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate: Ammonia and Nitrite should be undetectable; Nitrates as low as possible.
  • Diet: Omnivorous. They readily accept a variety of high-quality marine flake food, pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and other meaty foods. Feeding 1-3 times a day is generally recommended.
  • Temperament: Generally peaceful, especially when young. As they mature, especially if paired, the female can become more dominant and territorial.
  • Anemone Hosting: While they may host with certain anemones (like Bubble Tip Anemones), it's not a requirement for their health or happiness in an aquarium. Many captive-bred clownfish never host an anemone. If you do introduce an anemone, research its specific care requirements carefully, as many are much more demanding than the clownfish itself.
  • Compatibility: Can be kept in a pair (one larger female, one smaller male). Be cautious when introducing a smaller male to a larger, established female.
  • Reef Safe: Yes, they are considered reef safe and typically do not bother corals or invertebrates.
