Optical Multi-Surface Leak Sensor- (LD-3) NEW

New to the leak detector offerings is the Optical Multi Surface Leak Sensor (LD-3). This is a weighted sensor that is an improved sensor and design over our Solid-Surface Leak Sensor (LD-2). Those improvements include:

  • An epoxied design that prevents water incursion into the sensor circuitry. This allows the sensor to be utilized over and over despite how often it becomes activated and wet.
  • Utilizing an optical sensor allows the sensor to be placed on any surface including metal and epoxied cement floors without a false activation.

The LD-3 has a wire length of 5 meters.

Note: The LD3 is a leak sensor; the FMM port it is plugged into should be configured accordingly. Use the Water On Floor setting. Do not use the Optical setting, which is for optical level sensors.

The Neptune Systems Optical Leak Detection Probe Multi-Surface - (LD-3) represents the latest generation of leak detection technology from Neptune Systems. It's a significant upgrade from the older conductive strip-based LD-1 (low profile) and LD-2 (solid surface) probes, offering enhanced reliability and versatility.

The key differentiator of the LD-3 is its use of optical sensing technology.

Key Features and Functions:

Optical Sensor Technology:

Unlike the older probes that relied on two metal strips to complete a circuit when bridged by water (conductivity), the LD-3 uses an optical sensor. This sensor emits a light and detects changes in how that light is reflected when water is present.
This technology makes it inherently more reliable and less prone to false alarms.

Multi-Surface Compatibility:

This is a major advantage. Because it's an optical sensor, it can reliably detect water on a wider variety of surfaces, including:
Carpet: It's effective for detecting water under carpets and rugs, similar to the LD-1, but with improved reliability.

Solid Surfaces: Works perfectly on tile, wood, concrete, and inside cabinets, eliminating the limitations of the older LD-2.

Metallic Surfaces: A significant improvement! Older conductive probes (like the LD-2) could sometimes trigger false alarms if placed directly on metal surfaces (e.g., metal tank stands or epoxy-coated concrete with metallic particles) because the metal itself could conduct electricity between the probe's strips. The optical LD-3 is non-reactive to metal, preventing these false alarms.

Epoxy-Coated Cement: Can be used effectively on these surfaces without issues.
Reusable and Corrosion-Resistant:

The LD-3 features an epoxy-coated design, which makes it highly resistant to corrosion, especially from saltwater.
Unlike conductive probes whose metal strips can degrade over time with repeated saltwater exposure, the LD-3 can be reused repeatedly after coming into contact with water without compromising its long-term reliability. This is a huge benefit for peace of mind and longevity.

Weighted, Low-Profile Design:

While called "Multi-Surface," it often combines aspects of both previous probes. It has a relatively low-profile design that allows it to slip into tighter spaces, and it is weighted to ensure it stays flat and in proper contact with the surface.
Connection to FMM Module:

The LD-3 probe, like its predecessors, must be connected to one of the four dedicated sensor ports on a Neptune Systems FMM (Fluid Monitoring Module). The FMM is the interface that communicates the leak detection status to your Apex controller.
Integration with Apex Fusion:

The status of the LD-3 (wet/dry, or OPEN/CLOSED in Apex programming) is displayed in real-time on your Apex Fusion dashboard.
Leak detection events are logged, providing a clear history of any incidents.
Advanced Automation and Alerts:

The core benefit of any Apex leak sensor is the ability to trigger automated responses and notifications:
Instant Notifications: Receive immediate email, SMS, or push notifications to your mobile device, regardless of your location.

Audible Alarms: Trigger the audible alarm on the FMM module (and any other Apex-connected alarms) for immediate local alert.

Automated Equipment Shut-off: The most critical function. Program your Apex to shut down essential equipment the moment a leak is detected:
Return Pumps: To stop water from continuously flowing out of the system.

Dosing Pumps/ATO Systems: To prevent adding more water or chemicals to a leaking system.

Solenoid Valves: For RODI systems, it can shut off the water supply to prevent ongoing water production if the RODI unit leaks.

Customizable Responses: Tailor your Apex programming to react specifically based on where the leak is detected (e.g., a leak in the sump vs. a leak at the RODI unit).

Common Applications of the LD-3:

The LD-3's multi-surface capability makes it suitable for virtually any location where a leak could occur:

Under Aquariums Stands & Cabinets: Ideal for the base of the stand, inside cabinet compartments where sumps, reactors, and plumbing are located.
Under Carpets & Rugs: Perfect for rooms with carpeted floors where leaks from the tank or equipment could spread unnoticed.

Around RODI Units & Saltwater Mixing Stations: Critical for catching drips or spills from water production or mixing areas.
Under Chillers, Skimmers, and External Equipment: Place directly beneath any piece of equipment that holds or processes water.

Utility Rooms & Basements: Can be integrated into a broader home leak detection system.

Installation and Setup:

Placement: Identify all high-risk areas for leaks. Place the LD-3 directly on the surface, ensuring the sensor portion (usually a clear or slightly domed optical lens on the underside) is in contact with the area where water would pool.

Connection: Plug the LD-3 probe's jack into any available sensor port on your Neptune Systems FMM module.

Configuration in Apex Fusion:
Access your Apex Fusion dashboard. Your Apex controller should automatically detect the connected leak sensor.
Navigate to the FMM's configuration and the specific port where the LD-3 is connected. Name the sensor descriptively (e.g., "Display Floor Leak," "Mixing Station Leak").
Use the Apex Fusion "Tasks" wizard (often within the "Leak Detection Kit" or "Add a Leak Sensor" options) to easily set up email/SMS/push alerts and define automated actions. Program your desired responses (e.g., If Leak_Sensor_Name CLOSED Then OFF ReturnPump). "CLOSED" indicates water detected.
The Neptune Systems LD-3 offers superior leak detection capabilities due to its optical technology, enhanced durability, and true multi-surface compatibility. For serious aquarists, it provides unparalleled peace of mind and protection against the devastating effects of water leaks.
