Description:

The Melanochromis auratus, commonly known as the Golden Mbuna, is a striking African cichlid recognised for its bold horizontal stripes and vibrant colouration. Females and juveniles display golden-yellow bodies with contrasting black and white stripes, while mature dominant males typically develop dark brown to black colouring with pale blue or white stripes.

An active and highly territorial species, the Golden Mbuna is best suited to experienced fishkeepers with established African cichlid aquariums.

Lake Malawi, East Africa.

Around 24–28°C.

Adult Size:

Approximately 10–15 cm.

Lifespan:

Approximately 5–10 years with proper care.

Food:

Primarily herbivorous, feeding naturally on algae and aufwuchs found on rocky surfaces. Offer high-quality spirulina-based cichlid pellets or flakes, supplemented with vegetable matter such as blanched spinach or zucchini. Avoid excessive amounts of protein-rich foods.

Compatibility:

A highly aggressive and territorial cichlid, particularly among males and towards similarly coloured fish. Best housed with carefully selected, robust Lake Malawi mbuna that can tolerate its assertive behaviour.

Not suitable for peaceful community aquariums or slow-moving fish. A carefully managed stocking arrangement, adequate space and numerous hiding places are essential to help reduce aggression.

Habitat:

Requires a spacious aquarium of approximately 200 litres or larger, preferably with a tank length of at least 120 cm. Provide plenty of rock formations, caves and crevices to establish territories and offer shelter.

A sandy substrate, strong filtration, good water movement and stable alkaline water conditions are recommended to replicate its natural Lake Malawi environment.
