Scientific Name:
Melanotaenia kamaka
Description:
The M.Kamaka Rainbowfish is a smaller New Guinea rainbowfish with an elegantmetallic silver to steel-blue sheen rather than the intense colour blocks seen in some other rainbowfish. Mature males become noticeably deeper-bodied and develop stronger metallic colouration, while females and juveniles tend to remain slimmer and more subdued.
Origin:
Endemic toLake Kamakawaiar (Lake Kamaka) and the Triton Lakes region of West Papua, Indonesia. It occurs in shallow freshwater habitat around the lake margins, including areas with rocks/boulders and aquatic vegetation.
pH:
Approximately6.5–8.0 is a practical aquarium range. Their natural limestone-influenced habitat can be alkaline, with pH around8.0 recorded locally.
Temperature:
Approximately22–28°C.
Adult Size:
Usually around6–8 cm.
Lifespan:
Around6–8 years is reported under good aquarium conditions, although published species-specific lifespan information is limited.
Food:
Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet of good-qualityflakes or small pellets, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia and bloodworms. Their natural diet includes small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates along with plant material.
Compatibility:
Kamaka Rainbowfish arepeaceful, active schooling fish and are best kept in a group. They can be housed with other peaceful rainbowfish and similarly sized community species such as peaceful rasboras, Corydoras, small loricariid catfish and suitable gobies. As with other active rainbowfish, very timid or slow-moving tank mates may be overwhelmed by their activity, particularly at feeding time.
Habitat:
Provide a spacious aquarium withplenty of open swimming room together with planted areas around the sides and back. Plants, rocks and driftwood can provide shelter while leaving the centre or foreground open for schooling. Good filtration and stable, clean water are important, and a secure lid is advisable for active rainbowfish.
