Scientific Name: Chaetodon kleinii

Description: A beautiful and hardy marine butterflyfish featuring a golden-yellow to brown body, a distinctive black vertical band running through the eye and subtle blue markings around the head and fins. Klein's Butterflyfish is an active and inquisitive species known for its relatively peaceful temperament and adaptability to aquarium life.

Considered one of the hardier butterflyfish species, it makes an attractive addition to established marine aquariums. Also known for occasionally feeding on pest Aiptasia anemones.

Origin: Indo-Pacific region, including the Red Sea, East Africa, Indonesia, the Philippines, northern Australia, the Great Barrier Reef and surrounding tropical waters.

pH: Approximately 8.1–8.4

Temperature: Around 24–27°C

Adult Size: 12–15 cm

Lifespan: 5–10 years or longer with proper care.

Food: Omnivorous. Quality marine flakes, pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped prawns, mussels and other meaty marine foods. May also graze on algae, coral polyps and small marine invertebrates. Benefits from a varied diet with multiple small feedings throughout the day.

Compatibility: Generally peaceful to semi-aggressive and suitable for established fish-only marine aquariums. Compatible with clownfish, tangs, peaceful wrasses, angelfish and other similarly sized non-aggressive marine species. May become territorial towards other butterflyfish, particularly those of a similar appearance. Avoid housing with highly aggressive or predatory fish. Not considered reef safe, as it may nip at soft and hard corals, zoanthids, anemones and other sessile invertebrates.

Habitat: Well-established saltwater aquarium with plenty of live rock, caves, sheltered areas and open swimming space. Naturally inhabits coral reefs, lagoons and reef slopes, where it actively searches for food among rocks and coral formations. Moderate water movement, stable marine water conditions and good filtration are essential. Best suited to fish-only or fish-only-with-live-rock (FOWLR) aquariums due to its tendency to nip at corals and other reef invertebrates.
