Scientific Name

  • Neosilurus hyrtlii

Origin:Australia

Hyrtl’s Catfish is a hardy Australian native eel-tailed catfish with a peaceful nature and distinctive whiskers. It commonly reaches around20 cm, although larger specimens are recorded, and naturally forms shoals, so it can do particularly well with others of its own kind when space permits.

Temperature: 22–28°C
pH: 6.8–8.0
Diet: Carnivorous/omnivorous bottom feeder — sinking foods, bloodworms, earthworms, chopped prawns, insects and small crustaceans are excellent choices.
Tankmates: Generally peaceful and suitable with similarly sized, non-aggressive Australian natives and other peaceful community fish. Avoid very small tankmates that could potentially be viewed as food.
Tank setup: Provide plenty of bottom space with sand or fine gravel, hiding areas and good filtration. A group benefits from a tank at least90 cm long, with larger quarters needed as they grow
