The Gold Goatfish (specifically the Parupeneus cyclostomus), is one of the most vibrant and intelligent members of the goatfish family. While most individuals of this species are a yellowish-grey with blue highlights, the "gold" variant is a striking, solid lemon-yellow from head to tail.

Common Names: Goldsaddle Goatfish, Yellowsaddle Goatfish, Blue Goatfish
Scientific Name: Parupeneus cyclostomus
Max Size: Up to 50cm
Range: Indo-Pacific (Red Sea and East Africa to Hawaii and Japan)
Depth: Found between 1 to 125 meters deep

Key Characteristics
The "Beard": Like all goatfish, they possess two long, highly sensitive barbels under their chin. These act like hands or tongues, "tasting" and stirring the sand to flush out hidden prey like small fish, crustaceans, and worms.

Colour Morphing: Interestingly, this species is polymorphic. While the gold version is the most famous in the aquarium trade, others can appear blue or grey. They can even change to a pinkish hue at night when they rest.

Wolf-Like Hunting: Unlike many other fish, Gold Goatfish are known for collaborative hunting. They have been observed working in groups to "herd" prey, and will even follow other species like octopuses or eels to catch any scraps they stir up.

In the Aquarium
If you are considering one for a tank, keep in mind they are high-maintenance "monsters":

Tank Size: They need a massive amount of space (ideally 180+ gallons) because they are active swimmers and grow quite large.

The Sand Bed: They require a deep, soft sand bed. They will constantly "plow" the sand, which is great for aeration but can make the water cloudy if your filtration isn't top-notch.

Metabolism: They are "high-energy" fish and usually need to be fed 4–5 times a day to prevent them from wasting away.

Note: Because they are so effective at hunting, they are not "reef safe" with small shrimp, crabs, or tiny fish—they will view them as a snack.
