Appearance

They have the classic streamlined tetra shape and are fast, confident swimmers that look particularly impressive when kept in a school.

Aquarium Requirements

A minimum aquarium size of 90 litres is recommended, as these active fish appreciate plenty of swimming space and are happiest when kept in groups of at least six individuals.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 20–26°C
  • pH: 6.5–7.8
  • General Hardness (GH): 5–20 dGH
  • Moderate water flow
  • Regular partial water changes

Provide a combination of open swimming areas and planted sections. Hardy plants such as Java Fern, Anubias and Vallisneria are good choices, as Buenos Aires Tetras may nibble on soft-leaved plants.

Tank Mates

Gold Buenos Aires Tetras are active schooling fish that do well with other similarly sized, robust community species.

Suitable tank mates include:

  • Rainbowfish
  • Corydoras
  • Bristlenose Catfish
  • Larger Tetras
  • Rosy Barbs
  • Danios
  • Swordtails
  • Mollies

Avoid keeping them with slow-moving fish or species with long flowing fins, such as Angelfish or Fancy Guppies, as they may nip fins, particularly if kept in small groups.

Feeding

Gold Buenos Aires Tetras are omnivores and have a healthy appetite.

A varied diet should include:

  • Quality tropical flakes or pellets
  • Frozen bloodworms
  • Brine shrimp
  • Daphnia
  • Live foods as an occasional treat
  • Spirulina flakes and vegetable-based foods

A balanced diet helps maintain their vibrant golden colouration and overall health.

Behaviour

These fish are energetic, social and constantly active throughout the aquarium. They should always be kept in groups of six or more, as schooling helps reduce aggression and encourages natural behaviour.

While generally peaceful, they can become fin nippers if kept in groups that are too small or with unsuitable tank mates.

Breeding

Gold Buenos Aires Tetras are egg scatterers and can be bred in the home aquarium with the right conditions.

During spawning:

  • Females become noticeably fuller with eggs.
  • Eggs are scattered among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops.
  • Adults should be removed after spawning, as they may eat the eggs.

The eggs usually hatch within 24–36 hours, and the fry become free-swimming after several days. Feed newly hatched fry infusoria or commercial fry food before progressing to freshly hatched brine shrimp.

Care Tips

  • Keep in schools of at least six fish.
  • Provide plenty of swimming space.
  • Choose hardy plants if including live vegetation.
  • Avoid slow-moving or long-finned tank mates.
  • Feed a varied, high-quality diet.
  • Maintain excellent water quality with regular maintenance.
