Bumblebee Goby

Brachygobius doriae

Description:
A small and distinctive goby named for its bold black and yellow banding. Bumblebee Gobies are bottom-dwelling fish with plenty of personality and spend much of their time resting on the substrate, rocks or decorations. They can be territorial with their own kind but are generally peaceful when given enough space and hiding places.

Origin:
Southeast Asia, including areas of Borneo, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. They occur in slow-moving coastal rivers, streams, estuaries and mangrove habitats.

pH:
Approximately7.0–8.5

Temperature:
Around24–28°C

Adult Size:
Approximately3–4 cm

Lifespan:
Approximately3–5 years

Food:
Carnivorous micro-predator. Prefers small live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops and mosquito larvae. Some individuals can be reluctant to accept dry flakes or pellets.

Compatibility:
Generally peaceful towards other species but can be territorial with other Bumblebee Gobies. Best kept in a small group with plenty of individual hiding places. Suitable tank mates should be peaceful, similarly sized fish that will not outcompete them for food.

Habitat:
Prefers a well-established aquarium with fine sand or smooth substrate, rocks, driftwood, caves and plenty of sheltered areas. Gentle water movement is ideal. Bumblebee Gobies are found in both freshwater and brackish-influenced habitats depending on the exact species and population, so it is important to confirm whether the fish being purchased have been maintained in freshwater or brackish conditions.
