Black-banded Rainbowfish - In-store pickup only

Scientific Name:
Melanotaenia nigrans

Description:
The Black-banded Rainbowfish is an attractive Australian native rainbowfish with a distinctive dark horizontal stripe running along the side of its body. Males can develop beautiful iridescent blue, green, yellow and reddish tones. They are active, peaceful schooling fish and are best kept in groups.

Origin:
Native to northern Australia, including parts of the Northern Territory and northern Western Australia, where they inhabit freshwater streams, rivers, billabongs and wetlands.

pH:
Approximately6.0–8.0

Temperature:
Around22–28°C

Tank Mates:
Best kept with other peaceful rainbowfish, blue-eyes, gudgeons, peaceful catfish and similarly sized community fish. Avoid aggressive species, very slow-moving fish and fish with long flowing fins that may attract occasional fin-nipping.

Food:
Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet of quality flakes or small pellets along with live or frozen foods such asbrine shrimp, daphnia, mosquito larvae and bloodworms. They will also benefit from some plant-based foods.

Compatibility:
Black-banded Rainbowfish are generally peaceful, social fish that are well suited to community aquariums. They are fast and energetic swimmers, so very small, timid or slow-feeding species may struggle to compete with them at feeding time. Keeping them in a good-sized school helps encourage natural behaviour.

Habitat:
An active schooling species that appreciates plenty ofopen swimming space along with planted or sheltered areas around the edges of the aquarium. A well-filtered tank with good water movement, plants, driftwood and other natural features can provide an excellent environment while still leaving plenty of room for the school to cruise.
