Name: Astrea Snail (Astraea Snail) Pick up in store only
Scientific Name: Astraea spp. (also sold as Astralium spp.)
Description: A hardy and beneficial marine snail commonly kept in saltwater and reef aquariums for its excellent algae-eating abilities. Astraea snails feature a distinctive cone-shaped shell, often with ridges or small spikes, and are highly effective at grazing algae from live rock, aquarium glass and other hard surfaces. These peaceful invertebrates are a popular addition to reef clean-up crews and help maintain a clean, healthy aquarium.
Origin: Tropical marine waters, including the Caribbean and Indo-Pacific regions, depending on the species.
pH: Approximately 8.1–8.4
Temperature: Around 24–27°C
Adult Size: 2–5 cm, depending on species.
Lifespan: 2–5 years with proper care.
Food: Primarily herbivorous. Feeds on film algae, diatoms and certain types of green algae growing on aquarium glass, rocks and decorations. May accept dried seaweed or algae wafers when natural algae supplies are limited. Does not reliably consume hair algae or cyanobacteria.
Compatibility: Extremely peaceful and reef safe. Suitable for community marine aquariums with clownfish, gobies, blennies, tangs and other peaceful reef inhabitants. Safe with corals and most invertebrates. Avoid keeping with predatory fish, aggressive crabs and species known to eat snails, such as certain wrasses and triggerfish.
Habitat: Established saltwater or reef aquarium with stable water parameters, plenty of live rock and natural algae growth for grazing. Requires adequate calcium and alkalinity to maintain healthy shell growth. Specific gravity should be approximately 1.023–1.026. Minimum 40 litres recommended for a small number, provided sufficient algae is available. Astrea Snails can struggle to right themselves if overturned, so they should be repositioned when necessary. Sensitive to copper-based medications and sudden changes in water conditions.
