Scientific Name:Poecilia reticulata

Description: A small, active livebearing fish available in a wide range of colours and tail shapes. Males typically display brighter colours and flowing fins, while females are larger with more subdued colouring. A popular choice for peaceful community aquariums.

Origin: Northeastern South America and parts of the Caribbean. Most aquarium varieties are selectively bred in captivity.

pH: Approximately 7.0–8.0; prefers moderately hard to hard water.

Temperature: Around 22–26°C

Adult Size: Males approximately 3–4 cm; females approximately 5–6 cm.

Lifespan: Around 2–3 years with good care.

Food: High-quality fine flakes or micro pellets, supplemented with frozen or live brine shrimp, daphnia and vegetable-based foods such as spirulina flakes.

Compatibility: Generally peaceful and suitable for community aquariums with platies, other guppies and similarly sized, peaceful fish sharing their water requirements. Avoid aggressive fish and fin-nipping species such as tiger barbs. If keeping both sexes, allow at least two to three females per male to reduce harassment. Breeds readily and gives birth to live young.

Habitat: An established, well-filtered aquarium with plants, sheltered areas and open swimming space. Prefers gentle to moderate water movement and stable, mineral-rich water. Dense plants provide shelter for fry.
