AquaDepot Utricularia graminifolia - Live Plant - Tissue Culture

Utricularia graminifolia Tissue Culture is a unique carpeting plant prized for its fine, grass-like foliage that creates a soft, natural-looking lawn across the foreground of planted aquariums. Its delicate bright green leaves form dense mats when established, making it an excellent choice for nature-style aquascapes. Although technically a carnivorous plant in its emersed form, it poses no threat to fish or shrimp in the aquarium. Under strong lighting, with the addition of CO₂ and good water circulation, Utricularia graminifolia develops into a lush, vibrant carpet that adds texture and depth to any aquascape.

Care Requirements:

Utricularia graminifolia is best suited to intermediate and experienced aquascapers, as it performs best under moderate to high lighting with the addition of CO₂. Separate the tissue culture into small portions before planting them a few centimetres apart in a nutrient-rich substrate using aquascaping tweezers. The plant will gradually spread by sending out runners, eventually forming a dense carpet. Consistent fertilisation and stable water parameters are important for successful establishment, while good water flow helps keep the fine foliage free from debris. Patience is essential during the establishment phase, as growth may be slow initially before the carpet begins to spread.

Potential Issues and Tips:

Melting: Newly planted tissue culture may experience some melting as it adapts to submerged conditions. Maintaining stable water parameters and avoiding sudden changes will help minimise this while new growth develops.

Algae: Fine leaves can easily collect algae if lighting, nutrients, or CO₂ are out of balance. Regular maintenance, balanced fertilisation, and consistent CO₂ levels will help keep the carpet healthy.

Poor Carpet Formation: Insufficient lighting or a lack of CO₂ can result in slow growth and patchy coverage. High-quality lighting and stable CO₂ injection will encourage dense, even carpeting.

Planting: Divide the tissue culture into many small plugs rather than planting it as one large clump. This encourages faster establishment and more uniform carpet growth.

Tissue cultures are in a 5cm container - simply rinse gel and plant.

In ideal conditions, shelf life will be approx 4 weeks.

Basic care instructions:

• Do not remove lid or contamination will occur.
• Keep in a well-lit area.
• Storage temperature should not exceed 30°C.

Each pot is 50mm in diameter and packed full of healthy plants.
