AquaDepot Lilaeopsis novaezelandiae - Live Plant - Tissue Culture

Lilaeopsis novaezelandiae Tissue Culture is a fine-leaved carpeting plant that produces slender, grass-like green leaves, creating a natural lawn effect across the foreground of the aquarium. Its low-growing, spreading habit makes it ideal for open aquascapes, where it forms a soft, vibrant carpet that resembles underwater grass. As it matures, the plant spreads by runners, gradually filling in bare areas to create a dense, lush covering with a fresh, natural appearance.

Care Requirements:

Lilaeopsis novaezelandiae is suitable for aquarists with some experience and performs best under moderate to high lighting. Divide the tissue culture into small portions and plant them a few centimetres apart to encourage even spreading. While CO₂ is not essential, it will promote faster growth, denser coverage and a healthier overall appearance. A nutrient-rich substrate and regular fertilisation will support strong root development and vibrant green foliage. Trim the leaves occasionally to maintain a neat, compact carpet and encourage new growth. Stable water conditions and regular maintenance will help this plant establish and thrive.

Potential Issues and Tips:

  • Melting: Newly introduced tissue culture plants can sometimes experience some melting (loss of leaves) as they adapt to the new environment. Providing stable water parameters and good lighting can minimise this.
  • Algae: Imbalances in light, nutrients, or CO2 can lead to algae growth on the leaves. Maintaining proper balance and performing regular water changes can help prevent this.
  • Colour Loss: Insufficient lighting or nutrient deficiencies (especially iron) can cause the vibrant red colour to fade.
  • Trimming: Regular trimming is crucial for maintaining the desired shape and preventing the plant from overshadowing lower-growing species. Trim the tops and replant them to create a denser bush.

Tissue cultures are in a 5cm container - simply rinse gel and plant.

In ideal conditions, shelf life will be approx 4 weeks.
