Juncus repens Tissue Culture is an attractive and versatile stem plant known for its slender, upright green foliage and natural grass-like appearance. Native to wetlands in North America, it adds texture and movement to planted aquariums and works beautifully as a midground or background feature. Under higher lighting, the tips can develop attractive bronze to reddish tones, providing subtle colour contrast within the aquascape. Its slow to moderate growth and compact habit make it easy to maintain while complementing both nature-style and contemporary aquascapes.
Care Requirements:
Juncus repens is suitable for beginners through to experienced aquascapers, although it performs best under moderate to high lighting with the addition of CO₂. Plant individual stems into a nutrient-rich substrate, spacing them slightly apart to allow for healthy growth. While CO₂ is not essential, it will encourage stronger growth, denser foliage, and improved colouration. Regular fertilisation, including iron and trace elements, will support healthy development. Trim the stems as required to maintain the desired height and encourage fuller, bushier growth.
Potential Issues and Tips:
Melting: Newly introduced tissue culture plants may experience some melting as they transition to submerged aquarium conditions. Stable water parameters and patience will encourage healthy new growth.
Algae: Slow-growing stems can be susceptible to algae if lighting, nutrients, and CO₂ are not balanced. Regular water changes and a consistent fertilisation routine will help minimise algae growth.
Colour Development: Under lower lighting, the plant will remain bright green. Stronger lighting and adequate nutrients can encourage attractive bronze or reddish highlights on the upper foliage.
Growth Habit: Regular trimming encourages side shoots and a denser, more compact appearance. Healthy cuttings can be replanted to create a fuller group.
Tissue cultures are in a 5cm container - simply rinse gel and plant.
In ideal conditions, shelf life will be approx 4 weeks.
