Hemianthus callitrichoides 'Baby Tears HC' Tissue Culture is one of the most popular carpeting plants in the aquascaping hobby, renowned for its tiny, vibrant green leaves and ability to create a dense, lush carpet across the aquarium foreground. Its delicate, creeping growth habit produces a soft, natural-looking lawn that enhances depth and scale in any aquascape. Under high lighting, with adequate CO₂ and nutrients, 'Baby Tears HC' forms a compact carpet that is ideal for nature-style, Iwagumi, and Dutch aquascapes.

Care Requirements:

Hemianthus callitrichoides 'Baby Tears HC' is best suited to intermediate and experienced aquascapers, as it performs best under moderate to high lighting with the addition of CO₂. Divide the tissue culture into small portions and plant them a few centimetres apart in a nutrient-rich substrate using aquascaping tweezers. The plant spreads by producing creeping runners, gradually filling in the gaps to form a dense carpet. Regular fertilisation, stable water parameters, and good water circulation are essential for healthy growth. Occasional trimming will encourage horizontal spreading and help maintain a neat, even carpet.

Potential Issues and Tips:

Melting: Newly planted tissue culture may experience some melting while adapting to submerged aquarium conditions. Stable water parameters and consistent care will encourage healthy new growth.

Algae: The fine leaves can quickly collect algae if lighting, nutrients, or CO₂ are out of balance. Maintaining stable CO₂ levels, balanced fertilisation, and regular water changes will help prevent algae problems.

Poor Carpet Formation: Low lighting or insufficient CO₂ can cause slow growth, vertical stretching, or patchy coverage. Strong lighting and consistent CO₂ injection will encourage a dense, compact carpet.

Planting: Separate the tissue culture into many small plugs rather than planting it as one large clump. This allows the plant to establish more quickly and results in a fuller, more even carpet over time.

Tissue cultures are in a 5cm container - simply rinse gel and plant.

In ideal conditions, shelf life will be approx 4 weeks.

Basic care instructions:

• Keep in a well-lit area.
• Storage temperature should not exceed 30°C.
