Scientific Name:
Fundulopanchax gardneri
(Previously commonly known as Aphyosemion gardneri.)
Description:
Gardner’s Killifish is a striking West African killifish known for its vibrant colours and bold patterning. Males are particularly colourful, displaying combinations of blue, green, red and yellow, while females are generally more subdued. They are relatively peaceful but can be territorial, particularly between males.
Origin:
Native toWest Africa, particularly Nigeria and Cameroon, where they inhabit small streams, pools, swamps and other slow-moving or still freshwater habitats.
pH:
Approximately6.0–7.5
Temperature:
Around20–26°C, with approximately22–24°C being a good general aquarium range.
Adult Size:
Typically around5–7 cm, with males generally growing slightly larger than females.
Lifespan:
Approximately2–3 years, although well-cared-for individuals can sometimes live longer.
Food:
Carnivorous to omnivorous. They particularly enjoylive and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, mosquito larvae and bloodworms. Most will also accept appropriately sized quality flakes or pellets, although a varied diet containing meaty foods is recommended.
Compatibility:
Gardner’s Killifish can be kept with peaceful, similarly sized fish that prefer comparable water conditions. Suitable companions can include small peaceful tetras, rasboras, Corydoras and other calm community species. Males can be territorial towards one another, particularly when females are present, so provide plenty of cover and visual barriers. Very small fish and shrimp may be viewed as food, while aggressive or highly active tank mates are best avoided.
Habitat:
They prefer awell-planted aquarium with subdued lighting, plenty of hiding places and areas of gentle water movement. Floating plants, driftwood and leaf litter can help recreate their natural environment. Asecure, tight-fitting lid is essential, as killifish are excellent jumpers and can escape through surprisingly small gaps.
