Having Anubias attached to driftwood is a very popular and aesthetically pleasing way to incorporate these hardy and beautiful aquatic plants into your aquarium. It creates a natural look and allows the Anubias to thrive without being buried in the substrate, which can lead to rhizome rot.

Benefits of Anubias on Driftwood:

  • Natural Look: Driftwood provides an organic and varied surface for the Anubias to attach to, mimicking their growth on submerged logs and branches in their natural habitats.
  • Prevents Rhizome Rot: Anubias have a rhizome (a horizontal stem) from which their leaves and roots grow. Burying the rhizome in the substrate can restrict oxygen flow and lead to rot, which can kill the plant. Attaching it to driftwood keeps the rhizome exposed to the water column.
  • Optimal Growth: Anubias can readily absorb nutrients from the water column when attached to driftwood, promoting healthy growth.
  • Placement Flexibility: Driftwood pieces can be strategically placed at various levels within the tank, allowing you to position the Anubias in areas with appropriate light and flow.
  • Stability: Once attached, the Anubias is securely anchored and won't be easily uprooted by fish.

Popular Anubias Species for Driftwood:

Many Anubias species work well on driftwood. Some common and readily available choices in Caboolture include:

  • Anubias barteri var. nana: The classic dwarf Anubias, perfect for smaller driftwood pieces.
  • Anubias barteri: A larger variety with broader leaves, suitable for more substantial driftwood.
  • Anubias lanceolata: Features long, lance-shaped leaves, adding a different texture.
  • Anubias hastifolia: Has arrowhead-shaped leaves, providing a unique visual element.
  • Anubias coffeefolia: Known for its textured, coffee bean-like leaves.
  • Anubias pinto: A variegated variety with white or cream-colored patches on its leaves

Care of Anubias on Driftwood:

  • Lighting: Anubias are low-light plants, making them very adaptable. They will grow under a wide range of lighting conditions, but avoid very intense light, which can promote algae growth on their leaves.
  • Water Quality: Maintain good water quality with regular water changes. Anubias are relatively hardy but will still benefit from stable conditions.
  • Fertilization: They are slow growers and don't require heavy fertilization. However, a liquid fertilizer added to the water column can benefit their growth, especially in tanks with limited fish waste.
  • Algae Control: Anubias leaves can be susceptible to algae growth. Maintaining good water quality, appropriate lighting, and introducing algae-eating inhabitants like snails or shrimp can help. You can also gently wipe algae off the leaves with a soft cloth or your fingers during water changes.
  • Trimming: If the Anubias grows too large for the driftwood or you want to propagate it, you can carefully cut the rhizome with a sharp, clean blade. Ensure each section has some leaves and roots. These cuttings can then be attached to other pieces of driftwood or rocks.
