Aquatic Live Food MicroMagic Phytoplankton 5 Marine Species - Live Food - Instore Pick Up Only

MicroMagic Phytoplankton 5 Marine Species is a highly nutritious blend of 5 live microalgae species that is suitable for most reef invertebrates. The new and improved formula of this wide spectrum feed offers a broad particle size range (1-35 microns) and a complete Omega-3 profile, to cater for most filter-feeders through all developmental stages.

Why is phytoplankton important?

Phytoplankton along with algae are primary producers in the aquatic ecosystems and are the foundation of the aquatic food chain. By using energy from sunlight. They then convert dissolved inorganic nutrients such as nitrates, phosphates, and sulfur into proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Finally, those and are then eaten by primary consumers like zooplankton, small fish, shellfish, and crustaceans.

These in turn are fed on by secondary consumers, and so on. Therefore microalgae are the ultimate source of food and energy for other organisms in aquatic ecosystems.

Who is MicroMagic Phytoplankton 5 Marine Species for?

Filter feeders that rely directly on phytoplankton (microalgae) include bivalves like clams, scallops, mussels, and oysters, as well as hard and soft corals, feather dusters, sponges, ascidians, cleaner shrimp and zooplankton like rotifers, copepods, Daphnia and brine. Hence MicroMagic is a great nutritional source of food for most invertebrate filter feeders in your reef aquarium.

Others who heavily benefit from MicroMagic in your tank are the secondary consumers: your fish and everything else that feeds on zooplankton. Zooplankton fed and enriched with microalgae, is packed with nutrients and pigments that get transferred to your fish when eaten. This means enhanced growth, health and colouration for all the inhabitants of your aquarium.

Why is MicroMagic beneficial to your tank?

In addition to being an excellent feed, MicroMagic live phytoplankton removes excess nutrients by actively seeking out and consuming the Nitrates and Phosphates in your aquarium before they can contribute to nuisance algae growth. In contrast, processed (dead) feeds only add to the nutrient load by starting to decompose straight away.

This means that with continued use of MicroMagic phytoplankton you get fewer algae, crystal clear water, more copepods, and vibrant coral! Continued use of MicroMagic will also stabilize pH in your tank.

What’s in it?

MicroMagic Phytoplankton 5 Marine Species is formulated with 5 of some of the most popular microalgae strains used in aquaculture facilities. These include Nannochloropsis, Tetraselmis, Tisochrysis, Pavlova, and Phaeodactylum. They are all good in their own way. However, only together do they make a complete source of essential fatty and amino acids, vitamins, and carotenoids.

NANNO

Nannochloropsis oculata – non-flagellated yellow-green alga; cell size 1-5 microns

Nannochloropsis is a valuable feed in aquaculture providing polyunsaturated fatty acids, essential vitamins, amino acids and photosynthetic pigments. In particular, the omega-3 fatty acid eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) is produced in relatively high concentrations. It also consumes several nitrogen waste compounds including ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates.

TETRA

Tetraselmis sp- green alga with 4 flagella; cell size 6-14 microns

With a rich and varied amino/ fatty acid profile, this strain provides a very nutritional feed for your marine life. Recent studies have shown that Tetra has antimicrobial properties and can help control the bacterial load in your tank.

T-ISO

Tisochrysis lutea: golden-brown Biflagellate; cell size 4-6 microns

T. lutea is one of the most widely used phytoplankton species in commercial aquaculture due to its high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and a carotenoid fucoxanthin (pigment found in brown algae), which play a key role in health, development and resilience of aquatic organisms. T-ISO is an excellent feed for enriching zooplankton like rotifers, copepods and brine and is equally loved by bivalves.

PAV

Pavlova lutheri (also Diacronema lutheri)- golden-brown Biflagellate; cell size 4-6 microns

This microalgal species is characterized by a high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially EPA and DHA which are essential for marine animals and is widely used in bivalve hatcheries.

PHAEO

Phaeodactylum tricornutum- yellow-brown pennate diatom, cell length up to 35 microns

PHAEO is rich in carbohydrates and carotenoid fucoxanthin and like other diatoms, consumes silicates, restricting the growth of harmful algae and bacteria and reducing the cycle time of your tank.

PHAEO builds a silica-free frustule, which means that it can survive and keep consuming excess nutrients even in a silica-limited or -depleted tank. In addition, PHAEO can tolerate iron deficiency which is common in reef aquariums.

Usage Directions

Add 5ml per 40L 3-4 times per week for the first week. Increase by 2ml each week for three weeks, and then adjust as needed.

  • Spot-feed corals and inverts to maximize growth
  • Use with Aquatic Live Food’s live copepods, amphipods, rotifers, to establish or maintain a healthy zooplankton population in your tank.
  • This will be enjoyed by your clean-up crew.
  • Gradually increase MicroMagic dose to accelerate coral growth and increase copepod populations.

Storage

  • Store in the fridge
  • Is best when used within 7-14 days
  • Do not freeze
  • Shake bottle periodically to prolong shelf life
