Neptune Systems Trident Calibration Solution

3 items left

The Neptune Systems Trident is an automated testing system for reef aquariums that measures Alkalinity (dKH), Calcium (Ca), and Magnesium (Mg). While the primary consumables for the Trident are its reagents (Reagent A, B, and C), it also uses a dedicated Trident Calibration Solution for calibration.

What is the Trident Calibration Solution?

The Trident Calibration Solution is a specially formulated, pre-mixed liquid with precisely known values for Alkalinity, Calcium, and Magnesium. It serves as a reference standard to ensure the Trident's accuracy.

Why is it used?

Initial Setup: Although the Trident is factory-calibrated, Neptune Systems recommends performing a calibration with the included solution after the initial setup and allowing the unit to run for 48-72 hours with reagents to ensure everything is stable. This helps the Trident "learn" the specific conditions of your installation (e.g., sample line head height).

Reagent Batch Consistency: Each 2-month (and typically 6-month) Trident Reagent Kit from Neptune Systems includes a fresh bottle of calibration solution. This is because Neptune Systems strives for consistency across batches, and the calibration solution helps the Trident to be calibrated to that specific batch of reagents.
Troubleshooting/Accuracy Checks: If you suspect your Trident readings are drifting or are significantly off compared to manual test kits or ICP tests, a calibration can help verify or correct its performance.

After Major Maintenance: While not strictly required, if you perform significant maintenance on the Trident's internal plumbing (e.g., replacing sample or waste lines, or the DIY service kit), a calibration can help re-establish optimal performance.
Important Notes about Trident Calibration:

Included with Reagents:You generally purchase the Trident Calibration Solution as part of the Trident Reagent Kit (2-month or 6-month supply). You can sometimes find it sold separately by retailers if you need an extra bottle without buying a full reagent kit.
Not a Replacement for Reagents: The calibration solution is not a reagent itself. It's solely for calibration.

Single Use: Once a bottle of calibration solution is opened and used for a calibration, Neptune Systems states that it should be considered used up and disposed of. It will not hold its stated values for long once exposed to air.
Specific Process: The calibration process involves placing the Trident's sample line into the calibration solution and running a specific "Trident Calibration" task through Apex Fusion. The Trident will draw the solution, perform its internal tests, and adjust its readings accordingly. This process can take around 40-70 minutes.

Frequency: Neptune Systems' general recommendation is to calibrate the Trident with each new batch of reagents. So, if you're using 2-month reagent kits, you'd calibrate roughly every two months. Many users also compare their Trident readings to trusted manual test kits (e.g., Hanna checkers) or ICP tests to decide if more frequent calibration is needed or if an offset should be applied in Apex Fusion.
