TheL387 Orange Peckoltia Pleco, sometimes referred to as the "Red Fin" Peckoltia, is a beautiful and relatively peaceful pleco that could be a lovely addition to your aquarium.

Appearance:

  • As the name suggests, they have an orange hue to their base colour, often with darker patterns of black or brown stripes and spots. The intensity of the orange can vary.
  • They are sometimes called "Red Fin" due to a noticeable reddish or orange tint in their tail fin, though this isn't always prominent in all individuals.
  • At 4cm, they will exhibit juvenile patterns, which may intensify as they grow.

Tank Requirements:

  • Minimum Tank Size: While they are small now, they can grow up to 10-12 cm (4-4.7 inches). Therefore, even for a 4cm specimen, a tank of at least 75 liters (20 gallons) is recommended to accommodate their adult size and provide enough space.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 24-28°C (75-82°F). A reliable heater will be necessary  especially during cooler months, to maintain a stable temperature.
    • pH: 6.5-7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (GH 5-15 dGH, KH 5-15 dKH).
    • Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm.
    • Nitrate: Below 20 ppm through regular water changes.
  • Substrate: Sand or smooth gravel is ideal to protect their delicate barbels.
  • Decorations: Provide plenty of hiding places such as caves (pleco caves), driftwood, and rock structures. They are crepuscular and will appreciate shaded areas. Driftwood can also be beneficial as some Peckoltia species may rasp on it.
  • Water Flow: They appreciate moderate water flow with good oxygenation.

Temperament and Tank Mates:

  • L387 Orange Peckoltia are generally considered peaceful and can be kept in community tanks.
  • They can be slightly territorial towards their own species, so if keeping multiple, ensure plenty of space and individual hiding spots.
  • They are compatible with other peaceful small to medium-sized fish. Avoid large or aggressive bottom dwellers that might outcompete them for food or harass them.

Diet:

  • L387 are omnivores with a slight leaning towards meaty foods. They are not primarily algae eaters.
  • A varied diet is crucial for their health:
    • High-quality sinking pellets or wafers (both algae-based and meaty).
    • Frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.
    • Occasional fresh vegetables such as cucumber, zucchini, and blanched spinach. Offer these sparingly.
    • Ensure they get enough protein in their diet.
