Name: Hongi Cichlid - In-store pickup only
Scientific Name: Labidochromis sp. ‘Hongi’
Description: A colourful, rock-dwelling African mbuna cichlid. Mature males typically display a blue to violet body with dark vertical bars and a yellow to orange dorsal fin. Females and juveniles are generally less colourful. Colour intensity varies with maturity, dominance and breeding condition.
Origin: Lake Malawi in East Africa, particularly rocky habitats around Hongi Island and neighbouring areas.
pH: Approximately 7.5–8.5. Prefers hard, alkaline water.
Temperature: Around 24–27°C.
Adult Size: Males approximately 10–13 cm; females approximately 8–10 cm.
Lifespan: Approximately 5–10 years with good care.
Food: Quality vegetable-based mbuna pellets or flakes, spirulina foods and suitable vegetable matter. Naturally grazes algae and associated small organisms from rocks. Avoid mammal meat, excessively rich foods and overfeeding.
Compatibility: Territorial and best suited to a carefully planned Lake Malawi mbuna aquarium with similarly sized, robust species. Males can be aggressive towards other males and similar-looking fish, especially when breeding. A group of one male with at least three females is preferable to a pair. Unsuitable for peaceful community aquariums.
Habitat: An established aquarium with a sandy substrate and securely arranged rockwork forming numerous caves and territories. Break up lines of sight while retaining open swimming areas. Provide efficient filtration, strong aeration and regular partial water changes.
