Name: Red Rainbowfish (Salmon Red Rainbowfish) - In-Store Pick-Up Only
Scientific Name:Glossolepis incisus
Description: A stunning freshwater rainbowfish renowned for its brilliant red colouration, deep body and active swimming behaviour. Mature males develop an intense crimson-red colour, particularly when displaying to females, while females and juveniles are generally silver to olive-gold in appearance. Peaceful, hardy and energetic, the Red Rainbowfish is an excellent feature fish for larger community aquariums, adding vibrant colour and movement to the tank.
Origin: Indonesia – Endemic to Lake Sentani and surrounding waters in Papua, Indonesia.
pH: Approximately 7.0–8.0
Temperature: Around 24–28°C
Adult Size: Approximately 12–15 cm
Lifespan: Approximately 5–8 years with proper care.
Food: Omnivorous. Accepts high-quality tropical flakes, pellets, frozen and live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms and insect larvae. A varied diet containing both plant and animal-based foods, including foods rich in natural carotenoids, helps maintain good health and vibrant red colouration.
Compatibility: Peaceful and active. Suitable for larger community aquariums with other similarly sized rainbowfish, peaceful barbs, larger tetras, Corydoras and other non-aggressive species. Best maintained in groups of six or more, ideally with more females than males to encourage natural schooling and courtship behaviour. Avoid aggressive tank mates and very small or delicate fish that may be intimidated by their active swimming.
Habitat: Prefers a spacious, well-filtered aquarium with clean, well-oxygenated water and gentle to moderate water movement. Provide plenty of open swimming space alongside planted areas, driftwood and natural decorations for shelter. A darker substrate and suitable aquarium lighting can help highlight the males' brilliant red colouration. Regular water changes and stable water parameters are essential for maintaining good health. A secure aquarium lid is recommended, as rainbowfish are capable jumpers.
