Name: Ornatus Rainbowfish/Teerwah Creek Rainbowfish / Ornate Rainbowfish - Instore pick up only
Scientific Name:Rhadinocentrus ornatus (Teerwah Creek Locality)
Description: A beautiful and relatively small Australian native rainbowfish known for its delicate body shape, shimmering colouration and attractive fin displays. The Teerwah Creek variety ofRhadinocentrus ornatus features subtle iridescent tones, with males displaying more intense colours and extended fins, particularly during courtship. Colouration can vary between individuals and locality populations. These peaceful, active fish are an excellent choice for planted community aquariums and are particularly attractive when kept in groups.
Origin: Eastern Australia, with the Teerwah Creek locality originating from southeast Queensland.Rhadinocentrus ornatus naturally inhabits coastal freshwater creeks, streams and wetlands, often among dense aquatic vegetation.
pH: Approximately 5.5–7.0
Temperature: Around 20–26°C
Adult Size: Approximately 5–6 cm
Lifespan: Approximately 3–5 years under suitable aquarium conditions.
Food: Omnivorous, with a preference for small aquatic invertebrates. Feed a varied diet of quality fine tropical flakes, small pellets, frozen or live brine shrimp, daphnia, mosquito larvae and other appropriately sized foods. A varied diet helps maintain healthy growth, natural colouration and breeding condition.
Compatibility: Peaceful and social, best kept in groups of six or more, ideally with a mixture of males and females. Suitable tank mates include other small, peaceful rainbowfish, small rasboras, peaceful tetras and suitable small bottom-dwelling species. Avoid large, aggressive or highly active fish that may intimidate them. Keeping locality varieties separate is recommended to prevent crossbreeding and preserve their distinctive characteristics.
Habitat: A well-planted aquarium with fine-leaved plants, driftwood, leaf litter and shaded hiding places. Provide gentle water movement, good filtration and clean, well-oxygenated water. Stable water conditions and regular water changes are important for their health.
