Description: A stunning freshwater rainbowfish renowned for its brilliant turquoise-blue to green colouration, shimmering scales and active swimming behaviour. Mature males develop particularly intense colours, deeper bodies and more prominent fins, especially during courtship displays. Their colouration can change depending on lighting, mood and viewing angle, creating a beautiful iridescent appearance. Peaceful, hardy and energetic, the Lake Kutubu Rainbowfish makes an excellent addition to larger community aquariums.

Origin: Papua New Guinea – Endemic to Lake Kutubu and its associated waterways in the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea.

Adult Size: Approximately 10–12 cm

Lifespan: Approximately 5–8 years with proper care.

Food: Omnivorous. Accepts high-quality tropical flakes, small pellets, frozen and live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms and insect larvae. A varied diet containing both plant and animal-based foods helps maintain good health, growth and vibrant natural colouration.

Compatibility: Peaceful and active. Suitable for larger community aquariums with other similarly sized rainbowfish, peaceful barbs, larger tetras, Corydoras and other non-aggressive species that tolerate similar water conditions. Best maintained in groups of six or more, ideally with a mixture of males and females to encourage natural schooling and courtship behaviour. Avoid aggressive tank mates and very small or delicate fish that may be intimidated by their energetic swimming.

Habitat: Prefers a spacious, well-filtered aquarium with clean, well-oxygenated water and gentle to moderate water movement. Provide plenty of open swimming space alongside planted areas, driftwood and natural decorations for shelter. A darker substrate and suitable aquarium lighting can help highlight the fish's brilliant turquoise-blue colouration. Regular water changes and stable water parameters are important for maintaining good health. A secure aquarium lid is recommended, as rainbowfish are capable jumpers.
