The Purple Harlequin Rasbora is a stunning colour variant of the classic Harlequin Rasbora. While the standard variety is known for its coppery-orange glow, the Purple (or "Black") strain has been selectively bred for a deep purple to charcoal-violet body that contrasts beautifully with its iconic black triangular wedge.
Appearance & Size
Colouration: They feature a shimmering purple-pink to deep violet body. The signature black "pork chop" wedge on the rear half remains, often appearing even darker against the purple hue.
Size: They are a classic nano fish, reaching an adult length of approximately 4–5 cm (1.5–2 inches).
Lifespan: With proper care, they typically live for3 to 5 years.
Aquarium Care (Easy to Moderate)
Tank Size: A minimum of 40–60 liters (10–15 gallons) is acceptable, but a 75-liter (20-gallon) tank is highly recommended to allow a full school enough swimming room to display their natural behaviour.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 22–27°C (72–81°F).
pH: 5.0–7.5 (they prefer slightly acidic water, around 6.0–7.0).
Hardness: Soft to medium (up to 12 dGH).
Diet: They are omnivores and not picky. They thrive on high-quality tropical flakes or micro pellets. For the best color, supplement with live or frozen treats like daphnia, baby brine shrimp, or cyclops.
Behaviour & Tank Mates
Schooling: These are strictly schooling fish. You must keep them in a group of at least 6 to 10 individuals. In smaller numbers, they become shy, lose color, and may suffer from stress-related illnesses.
Temperament: Extremely peaceful. They are perfect for community tanks with other non-aggressive species.
Compatible Mates: Tetras (Neon, Ember, Cardinal), Corydoras, Dwarf Gouramis, and small Loaches. They are also generally shrimp-safe, though they might snack on tiny shrimplets.
Tank Setup
Vegetation: They love heavily planted tanks. Use broad-leaved plants like Anubias or Cryptocorynes, as they naturally like to spawn on the underside of leaves.
Substrate & Decor: A dark substrate and driftwood help mimic their natural "blackwater" habitat and make their purple colors pop.
Lid: A tight-fitting lid is essential—these fish are surprisingly good jumpers when startled!
