Green Severum (Heros efasciatus)

The Green Severum is a popular South American cichlid known for its calm temperament, intelligence and metallic green colouring. They are often called the “poor man’s discus” because they have a similar body shape but are easier to care for.

They are omnivores and do best on:

  • Vegetables like zucchini, peas and spinach

Tank mates

Suitable tank mates include:

  • Silver Dollars
  • Geophagus species
  • Larger tetras
  • Plecos
  • Other peaceful medium-large South American fish

Avoid:

  • Tiny community fish
  • Highly aggressive cichlids

Behaviour

Green Severums are intelligent and interactive fish. Many owners report they recognise feeding time and even take food from your hand. They are usually calm but become territorial during breeding.
